Virtual Private Network (VPN) A virtual private
network (VPN) creates a secure connection that runs across a public network. The
most common implementation of VPN is to use the Internet as the backbone
connecting multiple remote sites within a single organization. Without VPNs,
remote offices are connected in multiple ways. For example, a remote office
might have a voice connection to the main office (via a Telco), a data
connection to the main office (via a Telco), and a separate Internet connection.
The goal of VPNs is to use existing Internet connections to carry the voice and
data communication. While this has always been possible, it has been rejected
because data traveling across the Internet is subject to snooping by unwanted
eyes. VPNs bring together the ability to use the Internet for communication,
which is typically much less expensive than a Telco connection, and the security
that is required. When a company implements VPN, each site has a service to
encrypt data before it goes out over the public Internet. The information is
decrypted when it reaches its destination. The result is a private, but virtual,
network.
An analogy helpful for defining a VPN is a room full of people in which
everyone can hear everyone else, but three people are speaking in a language
only they can understand. They are having a private conversation across a public
forum. VPN
